Sisters In Purple was co-founded by three distinguished community activists and leaders in the field of domestic violence advocacy: Angelina Rosado, CEO and Founder of Returning Hope, Inc.; Shamara Kelly, Voices of Women, org and CEO and Founder of Black Families United in Love; and Erika Lucille Ewing, CEO and Founder of Got To Stop LLC. Their combined expertise and experience, along with their individual achievements, form the strong foundation of our organization, established in 2021.
At this time, we were all working in our organizations, raising awareness and providing services and resources to victims, families, and survivors of domestic violence and victims of injustice. We found ourselves in the same spaces and would support one another with our events and causes and share our experiences, expertise, and resources to help victims of domestic violence.
Our decision to join forces was catalyzed by the tragic death of a young Harlem expectant mother, Shaunice Young. Shaunice, a victim and survivor of domestic violence, was pregnant and returning home from her baby shower when her ex-boyfriend gunned her down. Her story deeply affected us and strengthened our resolve to make a difference.
We were stunned by the tragic news and even more outraged that Shaunice Young took all the steps we tell victims to take to survive, and still, the laws and the community could not protect her.
At this moment, we realized the potential of our collective strength, experiences, and expertise. We were determined to make a difference, to ensure that no one else would suffer the same fate as Shaunice Young.
In October 2021, we took to the streets and organized our first march in honor of Shaunice Young to wake up the Harlem community. We gained the attention and support of Harlem-born and raised 2021 candidate for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Although he was not elected into office yet, he stood by us. We marched from 125th Street past Shaunice Young's apartment to St. Nicholas Park. As we chanted in the streets, we could hear cars honking and people yelling from their windows, cheering us on in solidarity.
